How to sell a number plate in the UAE

1. Establish the identity and ownership status

Record the emirate, full code/category, number and ownership-document details before preparing an advertisement. Keep personal account and identity-document numbers out of public listing images.

2. Check which resale routes accept your plate

A private resale, an operator’s Buy Now stock and a government plate auction are different channels. Emirates Auction’s Ajman and Fujairah FAQs say those VIP auction channels are for government-provided numbers, so a private owner should not assume automatic auction admission. For a marketplace or dealer arrangement, confirm the actual seller eligibility, commission, payout timing and transfer process. An authority’s available-stock service is not automatically a private consignment service.

3. Build a dated comparison sheet

• Start with the same emirate, number length and full code where possible.
• Describe the actual pattern rather than using only “VIP” or “rare”.
• Keep completed sales, asking prices and live bids in separate columns.
• Preserve the source URL, date and lot ID where one exists.
• Note changed codes, different patterns and stale dates as limitations.

4. Separate your asking price from net proceeds

An advertisement shows what you request, not what a buyer has paid. The calculator explains whether matching support is transaction-backed, asking-only or model-only; none of those labels guarantees a sale or a time to find a buyer.

Write down which transfer charges or commissions you expect to bear, then calculate the net amount you would receive under a particular offer. Do not publish an unverified “last sold” amount or present a headline charity result as your plate’s direct comparison.

5. Use the applicable ownership-transfer route

RTA describes a digital plate-transfer service using Dubai Drive and UAE Pass. Other emirates and special cases can follow different procedures. Check the current service for the actual identity rather than copying a vehicle-sale checklist. (RTA: plate ownership transfer through Dubai Drive)

For example, the RAK operator FAQ identifies the original number certificate and possible additional amounts for some previously allocated numbers. Confirm those details before promising a buyer a particular transfer total. (Emirates Auction: RAK plate FAQ)

Agree the payment sequence within the chosen transaction process and retain its confirmation. Whether the number is currently attached to a vehicle is a service-specific issue; it is not a reason to assume every seller must follow the same detachment steps.
